Description

There is no other place like 92nd Street Y. In 2014, 92Y proudly celebrated its 140th anniversary. As we reflect on the generations of people served by 92Y over the course of this long history, we find that our legacy is a source of inspiration for the vision that will guide our future. Founded in 1874 to tend to the “moral, intellectual, and social improvement” of young Jewish adults, 92Y has evolved into a home for programming that serves the whole person, from infancy through the later years, fostering a commitment to Jewish values and wisdom that brings our rich tradition into dialogue with the modern world. Though times have changed, 92Y remains true to its goal to harness the power of arts and ideas to enrich, enlighten, and change lives, and the power of community to repair the world. Guided by this mission, 92Y’s vision for the future is to become the model Jewish community and cultural center for the 21st century, attracting, serving, and energizing current and future generations as a modern, relevant, and inclusive organization that emphasizes modern Jewish values and programming. As our work continues in our local community through programs like Education Outreach, which provides arts, music, and science education to 10,000 New York City students annually, and 92Y Israeliness, a home away from home for the Israeli community of New York, 92Y leverages its decades of communal leadership to make an impact outside our four walls. By becoming a global leader, a catalyst for social good, and an inspiration for action, 92Y will be able to share its vast resources with those seeking to make a positive impact on communities worldwide. Our work in becoming a global leader is well on its way. Through #GivingTuesday, 92Y has led over 10,000 partners in an effort to help make philanthropy and giving back part of the international conversation each year following Thanksgiving. By leading and hosting the annual Social Good Summit, 92Y convenes world leaders and influencers to discover ways technology can tackle the world’s greatest challenges. 92Y’s Video on Demand and Livestream websites share our world-class programming with people everywhere, including the United States Armed Forces, who participated in 92Y’s 2013 High Holidays services through this technology. Shababa Network will welcome dozens of Jewish educators and clergy from around the world to learn the Shababa approach and bring 92Y’s pioneering intergenerational Jewish programs into their communities. And our March 2014 Seven Days of Genius festival positioned 92Y as a thought leader, featuring talks, an education fair, a Shabbat dinner, and a new middle school curriculum that each explored concepts of intelligence, morality, and character. As 92Y continues to develop as a model community and cultural center for the 21st century, a careful balance between tradition and innovation will be held firm by our grounding in, and celebration of, the 140 years that brought us to today. 92Y enthusiastically welcomes and reaches out to people of all ages, races, faiths, and backgrounds while embracing Jewish values like learning and self-improvement, the importance of family, the joy of life, and giving back to our wonderfully diverse and growing community. The breadth of programs and services we offer, and the diversity of the community we serve both locally and globally, make us confident in proudly proclaiming: There is no other place like 92Y.
