Year founded: 1989

Description

The Israeli school system is plagued by a shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate facilities and minimal instruction hours in core subjects. Recent international assessments rank Israeli students at the bottom of all students tested from 33 other OECD countries. An under-educated population puts Israel’s predominantly knowledge-based economy at risk. Through Darca schools, Israeli children discover and harness the power of education as a means to improve quality of life for themselves, their communities and their country. YRF Darca operates a network of 23 high schools and 2 learning centers throughout Israel, working in some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities. These high schools are known for academic excellence, commitment to high achievement, an innovative approach to education and inspiring leadership. Darca schools are known for academic excellence, commitment to high achievement, an innovative approach to education and inspiring leadership. Darca is awarded control of a school through a tender process, competing with other networks. However, unlike other Israeli networks, Darca is fully philanthropic, raising funds from supporters to cover its overhead. Not only does Darca reinvest every dollar the Ministry of Education provides back into the schools, Darca also adds 10-15% in additional funding to improve the schools. These funds are raised from outside foundations and donors. Darca was established in 2010 by the Rashi Foundation, one of Israel’s largest foundations. Since the merger with YRF, Darca operates as an independent operational organization that relies on support from funders to execute its mission. YRF Israel operations have been fully integrated into Darca in Israel. In the US, YRF will begin to operate under the name YRF Darca, though there will be no change in management, board or legal status. YRF Darca will serve as Darca’s global marketing, fundraising and donor engagement arm, enabling the Israel operations to focus solely on the running of the schools.
